oin us in the vibrant CSHS medicinal herb garden for this five week, entry level course. Learn to identify and use abundant springtime plants, make herbal remedies in our lab, and learn firsthand the healing power of herbs. Each week we will focus on different plants as they come into season -- nettles, cleavers, violets, calendula and more will be covered!
We will focus on how to incorporate herbs into our daily lives to best support our bodies as we move through seasonal changes ~ Learn to manage seasonal allergies, gain experience with basic wound care protocols, and  learn how to support healthy digestion for overall immunity. 
Hands-on learning is emphasized in this course. You will learn how to make herbal teas, springtime vinegars, tinctures, glycerites, and more!
Learn food as medicine techniques to incorporate springtime herbs into your diet.
* Receive recipes, samples, and lots of in-class tastings!
* Learn to identify, harvest, and process spring medicinal plants.
This class is designed to be an introduction to herbal medicine, but all experience levels are welcome.
 
It is intended for students to take both Spring and Fall Essentials, as the information in each course is different and relevant to the seasons.

 

FLOWER ESSENCE IMMERSION

Invite the magic of flower essences into your life! Join us in the beautiful gardens of CSHS to experience the profound medicine of flower essences. Spend the day exploring the healing powers of specific flowers through the lens of folk and traditional essence medicine. 

We will learn each step of how to make an essence, how to use them in your personal healing journey, and how to incorporate essences into your work in the communities you serve. We will touch on proving methods of flower essences, plant medicine poems, place-based essence making, essences as protection, and incorporating the blooms into your dreamwork.

In these times of unrest flowers and the essences we make from them can be excellent teachers to help us become our most centered and honest selves. We hope you will join us. Each student will go home with your own individual essence made from the CSHS garden.

Based on the Slow Scent® method of perfumery developed by Mandy Aftel, this experiential class covers perfumery history, blending guidelines for top, middle and base notes, dilution ratios, how to use accessory notes, odor intensity, and more with a carefully curated selection of over 20 different essential oils, CO2s, and absolutes. Whether creating natural perfumes or scented body care products, understanding the composition of perfumery blending can help bring your creations to new heights. Everyone will learn how to craft their own natural perfume and formulate two unique solid perfumes to take home.

Learn how to grow medicinal plants from seed and cuttings in this class designed for the beginning gardener. We will focus on medicinal plants that grow well in California, including calendula, yarrow, chamomile, ashwagandha, holy basil/tulsi, elderberry, echinacea, angelica, yerba mansa and many more. This class will include hands on demonstrations of various techniques of growing and seeing the plants in person in the cshs garden showing where they thrive and how to grow them successfully. You will go home with seeds and plant cuttings.

This in-depth class invites you to explore a wide range of therapeutic tools for calming, repleting, and restoring the nervous system. Christa will guide you through key nervine herbs and calming adaptogens, synergistic formulations, targeted aromatic medicines, and essential foundational practices that foster long-term nervous system resilience and adaptability. You’ll learn effective short-acting and long-acting strategies to relieve anxiety, tension, and stress; enhance sleep; sustain balanced energy; subtly lift mood; and sharpen mental focus.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with core herbal preparation methods, including making alcohol- and glycerin-based extracts from fresh and dried plants and preparing infusions, decoctions, and syrups.

LAVENDER HARVEST AND
DISTILLATION EVENING

Join us  as we near the Summer Solstice. Our Lavender evening will begin with meeting at CSHS and carpooling to our herb farm a few minutes away. We will be harvesting  fresh Lavender and then heading back to CSHS to distill our harvest, learn about the many uses of Lavender and make Lavender wands. You will go home with a freshly distilled Lavender hydrosol and what you harvested for your own use.

Bring food to eat while we are distilling the Lavender.

We will focus on the respiratory, immune, and digestive systems: Learn to navigate the challenges of colds + flu, respiratory health  conditions and how to support digestive health for overall immunity. Hands-on learning is emphasized in this course. You will learn how to make herbal teas, fire cider, infused oils, syrups,medicinal honey, and more!

THE AMAZING WORLD OF MUSHROOMS AND THEIR MEDICINES

In this two-day class we will delve into the amazing world of mushrooms and mushroom medicines. On the first day we will explore mushrooms in general, looking at growth behavior, environmental relationships, and clues to proper identification. We will then turn our focus to some common medicinals and root around the duff of both traditional uses and current research. We will conclude with a discussion on the good and the bad of mushroom products found in the marketplace.

On the second day we will explore a variety of ways to make our own potent mushroom medicines at home. We will start with a discussion of different extraction methods, exploring the how’s and the why’s. Then we’ll roll up our sleeves and try our hand with each one. We will go home with the medicines that we make in class and the knowledge to make more.

HARVESTING MEDICINAL ROOTS

Fall is one of the best times to harvest the roots of medicinal plants. Come to the CSHS garden and learn how to properly harvest and process herbal roots for their optimal medicinal properties. Class includes hands harvesting of echinacea, comfrey, elecampane, burdock and more. After harvesting we will discuss some of the ways to utilize these fresh roots for medicinal preparations.

BOTANICAL CREAM AND LOTION MAKING

Join us for a day of immersive herbal crafting as we explore the art and science of creating nourishing botanical lotions & creams. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll dive into the foundations of lotion making while celebrating the herbs that support our skin through the dry autumn months.

We will work step-by-step through a basic cream and lotion recipe, discussing each ingredient’s unique gifts and how botanical extracts can elevate a simple formula into a deeply nourishing and hydrating herbal remedy. Using tinctures, glycerites, and infused oils from the CSHS apothecary, we’ll explore multiple ways to weave plant medicine into topical body care.

We’ll also step into the CSHS gardens to visit the herbs themselves and connect with the plants we’ll be crafting with. Throughout the day, students will gain confidence in working with emulsions, selecting herbal allies for skin wellness, and blending textures that feel beautiful on the body.

This is a playful, creative class designed for beginners and for anyone who wants to bring more herbal magic into their everyday self-care. Everyone will go home with their own handmade lotion and the foundational recipes to continue crafting at home.
